It’s no good having a website if no one can find it. That’s the bottom line. But the good news is that there is plenty that you can do to increase your chances of the right people finding you. After all it’s no good getting a million visitors to your site if none of them are interested in what you have to say or sell.

That’s why you have to keep your target audience firmly in mind when you start optimizing your website so that they can find you. A key part of any optimization strategy is the use of keywords. All the articles you include on your website should include keywords that are likely to be searched for when your chosen audience goes online and performs a search on Google, Yahoo or any one of all the other search engines online today.

But bear in mind that there are plenty of other websites out there that will also want to appear as high up as possible in those same search results. You will be competing with them so don’t go for the most basic search terms; you need to include longer ones that will more accurately target the people you are looking for, as well as reduce the amount of competition you are up against.

Some knowledge of HTML is also necessary if you are to highlight the most important words and phrases on your site for when the search engine robots pay you a visit. Don’t forget your title and header tags and make sure you include descriptive words and phrases within them. Think about what your visitors are looking for and appeal directly to them as well as to the robots.

While you are optimizing your site it is very important that you don’t get carried away and start including keywords all over the place. Too few will result in you not getting found on the search engines; too many and you will get banned altogether. It’s not very easy to stray into black hat SEO territory without realising, but you should always be aware of what you are doing so you don’t come unstuck.

Some people make the mistake of thinking that optimizing their website is a one off deal, but nothing could be further from the truth. Even if you end up getting to the number one position on Google there will be no time to sit back and relax and enjoy your victory; you will need to carry on working on your search engine optimization techniques to ensure that you stay there.

While the basic principles of search engine optimization are quite easy to understand and apply, it’s always a good idea to search for new sources of information online so you can stay up to date with what’s working at the moment. While the basic techniques stay pretty much the same, people are always discovering new and legitimate ways of achieving better results, and if you keep an ear to the ground you can take advantage of these as well.
