There are a lot of points you need to consider when you are thinking of going online with your own business. What kind of website do you want? Do you need to be able to sell items from it or is it going to be informational only?

But one of the most important questions has nothing to do with your actual website – it’s about the hosting plan you choose. It’s easy to think that all hosting plans are the same but that isn’t true. That’s why you need to consider your needs carefully and then look for a package that meets them all. If you start the other way around you are likely to go for the cheapest option without really looking at what you are getting for your money.

The first thing to bear in mind is the fact that each plan generally allows you a certain amount of traffic and webspace. Be sure you can upgrade easily if necessary, regardless of what plan you choose. If you get more visitors showing up on your hit counter than you were expecting, you could suddenly find you are unable to get any more. Some hosts will automatically upgrade you though, meaning your visitors can keep on coming.

Some hosting packages also come complete with several free domain names, so it’s worth checking whether it would be cheaper to get this type of hosting than it would be to pay for your domains separately.

Another question is how big your site is going to be. Some hosting plans will actually tell you how many pages you can have if they provide everything you need to create the site yourself. Again you need to consider whether you are able to design and create your own website, or whether you are calling in a web designer to do the hard work, in which case you simply need to be able to upload everything onto the web when the time comes.

You’ll also need to consider how much you might want to expand in the future. Even if you haven’t got many visitors clocking up in your hit counter to begin with, things could be very different in a few months time. You might initially be quite happy with only having a handful of free email addresses included with your hosting plan, but will those few be enough later on?

It’s clear that you need to consider what you want both now and in the future before you even think about getting a hosting plan. There are so many different variations that you could be spending some time trying to figure out which one is the best for you, but there is one important thing that we haven’t yet mentioned.

Make sure you look into the background of each web host before you make your selection. Some are invariably better than others and you will want to go with the one that has the best track record and the least downtime if you want your site to be accessible at all times.
